Description

Freedom of movement is one of the cornerstones of the European Union, enabling millions of EU citizens and their families to live, work, study, and build lives across borders. This course provides a detailed, structured exploration of who benefits from this freedom and under what conditions. Through a combination of legal analysis, practical examples, and user-friendly explanations, you will learn how Article 21 TFEU and Directive 2004/38/EC define “Union citizens” and “family members”, including spouses, registered partners, children, dependent relatives, and extended family members. The course examines the specific conditions under which family members retain their residence rights — including situations involving divorce, separation, annulment, departure, or death of the EU citizen. You will gain a deep understanding of the concepts that underpin EU mobility law and how they are applied in practice. Special modules explain the important distinction between those who move across borders (and therefore fall under EU law) and those in purely internal situations (where national law applies). The training also highlights the role of case law from the Court of Justice in shaping the evolving interpretation of free movement rights. Whether you work in public administration, provide legal or social support, or simply want to understand the scope of EU mobility for your own personal circumstances, this free course offers a clear and authoritative guide. Free access. Register to begin immediately.
